DAY 1 to 2: Nxai Pan
We meet you after breakfast and drive to Nxai Pan National Park,
part of the world's largest salt pan system, where we set up
camp under shade trees. We take a late afternoon game drive
hoping to spot the giraffe-eating lions that are famous in this
area.
Next morning we get up early and game drive across the grass
pans where, during the summer, migrating herds of wildebeest
and zebra graze. During the heat of the day we return to camp
for a siesta, or cut open the abundant tsama melons to attract
the desert bird life. In the afternoon we go game driving again,
returning just after sunset to prepare the fire and evening
meal.
DAY 3 to 5: Central Kalahari Game
Reserve
After an early breakfast on Day 3 we break camp and drive to
the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. We drive along some rough,
sandy tracks, and through low scrub, where we stop for lunch,
then finally over rolling hills until we reach Deception Valley
in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. This is one of the most
beautiful areas of the reserve and we pitch camp on the edge
of the valley before setting off on a late afternoon game drive.
We spend the days taking early morning and late afternoon game
drives when the wildlife at its most active. We can expect to
see some of the smaller predators here such as bat-eared fox
and black-backed jackal, as well as desert antelope like springbok
and gemsbok. If we are lucky we will spot the black-maned Kalahari
lion and cheetah. During, and just after, the wet season game
viewing can be spectacular with lion, cheetah, and hyena all
coming to prey on the abundant springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest,
and giraffe.
During the heat of the day we take our lead from the wildlife
and retreat to the shade of the trees for a siesta or to watch
the weaver birds building their nests. After dinner, the open
desert landscapes are perfect for stargazing and if we're lucky
we may see the nocturnal brown hyena.
